Myrinet-a gigabit-per-second local-area network
نویسنده
چکیده
Myrinet is a new type of local-area network (LAN) based on the technology used for packet communication and switching within "massivelyparallel processors" (MPPs). Think of Myrinet as an MPP message-passing network that can span campus dimensions, rather than as a wide-area telecommunications network that is operating in close quarters. The technical steps toward making Myrinet a reality included the development of (1) robust, 25m communication channels with flow control, packet framing, and error control; (2) self-initializing, low-latency, cut-through switches; (3) host interfaces that can map the network, select routes, and translate from network addresses to routes, as well as handle packet traffic; and (4) streamlined host software that allows direct communication between user processes and the network.

Improving PVM Performance Using ATOMIC User-Level Protocol
Parallel virtual machine (PVM) software system provides a programming environment that allows a collection of networked workstations to appear as a single concurrent computational resource. The performance of parallel applications in this environment depends on the performance of reliable data transfers between tasks. In this paper, we improve PVM communication performance over the ATOMIC LAN, ...
متن کاملEfficient Multicast on Myrinet using Link-Level Flow Control
This paper studies the implementation of efficient multicast protocols for Myrinet, a switched, wormhole-routed, Gigabit-per-second network technology. Since Myrinet does not support multicasting in hardware, multicast services must be implemented in software. We present a new, efficient, and reliable software multicast protocol that uses the network interface to efficiently forward multicast t...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Gigabit Ethernet and Myrinet for System-Area-Networks
Low latency and high bandwidth networking is essential for cluster computing and System-Area-Networks (SAN). The performance of a SAN optimized interconnect, Myrinet, is compared with gigabit Ethernet running TCP/IP. Though Myrinet has lower latencies and higher throughput than gigabit Ethernet, it is found that an efficient implementation of message passing interface library over TCP/IP achiev...
متن کاملA Comparison of two Gigabit SAN/LAN technologies: Scalable Coherent Interface versus Myrinet
Several commercial Gigabit interconnect technologies are currently emerging due to the results of the intensive research with the NSF Gigabit Networking testbeds. A fair comparison of these new, but different network technologies needs a common denominator as a basis. To characterize networking performance, we propose to carry out a comparison at three different levels: (1) simple remote load/s...
متن کاملPerformance Comparison of different High-Speed Networks with a Uniform Efficient Programming Interface
The communication network and its interface are an important factor for the performance of modern cluster computing systems. During the last years, several new approaches were developed which yield higher bandwidth and lower latency than traditional alternatives. However, applications often can exploit the performance of the underlying network only by using specially tuned programming interface...
